A little slice of Southwest Florida history

The Honc Family is as much a part of our local history, as the waterfront communities they helped develop. Vincent Honc moved to Pine Island from Czechoslovakia in 1917. The subtropical climate in Bokeelia provided him a nearly perfect atmosphere to sprout his small horticultural business. It was here that Vincent planted the first mango trees that have now become such an iconic part of Pine Island...

Thank you for visiting our Gallery. Below, you'll find photos taken from some of the projects we've completed in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, La Belle and in other cities across Southwest Florida. As you can see, we exceed every construction standard in all of our projects. We could cut corners to save a few dollars and still pass inspection, but then Honc Docks & Lifts wouldn't be delivering the quality of work that our customers have appreciated and come to expect over the years.

Our goal is to build the very best dock, boat lift and boathouse, and still stay at a competitive price. Your custom project should provide many years of enjoyment for you and your family. We at Honc Docks & Lifts have learned that it is more economical to build it right the first time than to have to fix or replace it later.

We look forward to working with you on your waterfront project.

Uninsured and unlicensed marine contractors are a very big problem in Southwest Florida. Some "contractors" (including established companies) fail to obtain proper Workers' Compensation coverage for their employees, often resulting in conveniently low prices. Many times crew leaders are covered, but not their helpers. Other instances reveal that company owners are covered, but employees are paid "under the table," resulting in no Workers' Compensation coverage.

Did you know that Florida marine contractors are required to have Liability, Longshoreman's and Jones Act coverage?

Especially important is the Longshoreman's and Jones Act coverage, which very few local dock builders carry. This coverage protects you, the customer or homeowner from huge employee lawsuits. It is assured that if an employee is hurt on your property and files a claim, a lawyer will bring legal action against you.

These insurance policies, although costly, are in place to protect the contractor, employee, and YOU, the customer. Don't take an unnecessary risk on a "bargain job" and open yourself up to unprotected contracting.

It was here that Vincent planted the first mango trees that have now become such an iconic part of Pine Island.

In 1918, Vince married a young lady named Ludmilla of Naples. Vince and Ludmilla had nine children. The youngest boy, John, grew up helping his father tend their tropical trees at the Bokeelia homestead. In 1950, John married Lillian Yahl, and began building a business and a family. Shortly after, in 1955, he founded Honc Construction.

It was around this time that Gulf American Land Corporation began digging the canal systems that turned a south Florida swamp into the waterfront wonderland that we today call Cape Coral. With all the newly created canal front property, John recognized the opportunities our area had for good marine contractors and dock builders and in 1958, Honc Construction built their first seawall. As the business was growing, so was John and Lillian’s family. Lillian gave birth to 7 boys and 2 girls. The Honc children proved themselves as industrious as their parents, and by 2005 Honc Construction had grown into 4 individual companies with over 150 employees collectively:

  • Honc Docks and Lifts
  • Honc Marine (Seawalls)
  • Honc Septic and Grading
  • Honc Construction

Today, we have over 10,000 Dock and Seawall jobs to our credit. Our contracts range on a daily basis from $100 to over $1,000,000. We have the equipment and the personnel to tackle entire marinas or the boatlift in your backyard. We are appreciative of every phone call we get, and thankful for every contract we receive.

Although some of the Honc offices have moved out of Pine Island, John Honc, Sr. still lives on the original homestead in Bokeelia. The old cypress house was destroyed in 2003 when the eye of Hurricane Charlie passed over, luckily the rest of the homes survived. We are proud of our family heritage in the area, and truly believe that every dock we build comes with its own bit of Southwest Florida history.
